UPDATE: Armed robbers don’t frighten woman (65)

A 65-year-old woman praised God for keeping her safe after four suspect armed robbers crashed the car they were driving into her vehicle on Thursday (May 28).

The four men, who were believed to be armed with handguns, robbed a Jet Mart on Voortrekker Road, Brakpan earlier in the day.

They fled the scene and were being pursued by police.

Police from the Brakpan Police Station spotted them and called for backup.

Two of them were arrested.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said one was apprehended outside the Benoni Licensing Department and another in the underground parking of Lakeside Mall.

There was a heavy police presence and hordes of curious onlookers at the scene of the collision.

Rynpark Five resident Joey Bauermeister and her 85-year-old friend (known only as Phylis), of Rynpark One, were driving along Tom Jones Street when a white Toyota Camry crashed into her silver Polo.

“There were two rows of cars and they overtook on the side of the road where I was suppose to drive,” Bauermeister told the City Times from her car shortly after the incident.

“The next moment, I just saw this car coming around the cars that were waiting for the robot to change, and he drove right into me.”

The Camry crashed into her vehicle head on.

“Then I saw them (suspects) peeling out of the windows and the door that was open on the right hand side.

“Immediately after the impact, they (the suspects) started getting out of the vehicle.”

Bauermeister said the men ran off in different directions.

She didn’t feel in danger, and was more concerned for the safety of her friend, who started breathing heavily after the impact.

“I was so amazed by what was happening,” she told the City Times.

“I’m fine, praise God.”

Bauermeister’s friend Phylis was admitted to the Sunshine Hospital and sustained no visible injuries.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said electrical appliances and cellphones were found in the Camry.

The two suspects, both of whom are in their 30s, will face charges of business robbery and possession of suspected stolen goods.
