Care centre treats pensioners

Haven Care Centre, at 156 Oak Road, Benoni Agricultural Holdings, hosted a pensioners' day on Saturday (May 23).

They wanted to spoil the pensioners for the day and hope to make it a regular event.

Residents from Rynpark One and the NG Kerk Benoni Benjamin attended the event and were treated to lunch and pudding on the peaceful plot.

“It’s great, what they’re doing here is so lovely,” said Jeanette Christie, from Rynpark One.

Haven Care Centre takes care of abused women and children and destitute people,” said Beverley Croote, spokesperson for the centre.

“We give them a place to stay and a job, for which they receive a small salary and three meals a day.

“We raise funds via telephone and have several sponsors supporting us.”

Pem Morgan founded the Haven Care Centre with his late co-founder, Betty Crellin, in 1999.

“I moved to Benoni in 1999 and rented a cottage from Betty,” said Morgan.

“One day I went to town and was surprised by the number of beggars asking for food, so Betty and I started a soup kitchen.

“The people told us they would do anything not to live on the streets, so we put up a few people in wooden sheds, now it’s grown beyond my expectations.

“At the moment we’re a family here; it’s the perfect size, I wouldn’t want it to grow any further.”

The centre held a pensioners day around the same time last year and will try to host one three times a year in the future.

“We organised this to spoil the pensioners a bit, because they’ve done their duty, they’ve earned it,” said Croote.
