Two stabbed in supermarket robbery

Two patrons were stabbed shortly after five robbers entered an Actonville supermarket last night (May 21).

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson WO Ramothakhi Maqabe said the men, one armed with a handgun and two with knives, entered the Jabula Supermarket, on Mayet Drive, at around 7pm.

They pushed two security guards outside and held-up the people in the shop.

“The robbers demanded money and took an undisclosed amount in cash, airtime and groceries. They also robbed two cell phones and cash from a man in the shop,” said Maqabe.

The man’s passport was taken and he was stabbed in the shoulder.

Another man in the shop, who tried to run away from the incident, was chased by one of the robbers and stabbed in the hand.

His passport was also taken.

Maqabe said one shot was fired in the establishment and five more outside.

Police believe this was done to intimidate the victims.

No one was injured during the gunfire and the two victims, who were stabbed, were not hospitalised.

The robbers made off on foot. No arrests have been made and a case of business robbery has been opened.
