Taxi driver gunned down

Police are searching for two men who opened fire on and killed a taxi owner in Daveyton, yesterday (May 21).

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson WO Ramothakhi Maqabe said the incident occurred near the Daveyton Train Station, at around 2pm.

Maqabe said the victim, who is in his 30s, returned to his taxi at the taxi rank after visiting the nearby offices of the Benoni Taxi Association, in Daveyton.

“When he was done at the offices, he went to his taxi and two guys appeared from nowhere and started shooting at him,” said the spokesperson.

The victim was shot in the back several times and was declared dead on the scene.

The motive for the crime is not known at this stage and police are still gathering statements from witnesses.

No arrests have been made and a case of murder has been opened.

The incident will be investigated by the Taxi Violence Unit.
