Family is addicted to crocheting

Crocheting is addictive.

“We are all addicted.”

“I never used to crochet, but I am addicted – we crochet until 12 at night.”

These are the words of Kingsway resident Ntombi Ndlovu, who was one of several volunteers at Lakeside Mall on Saturday, May 16, who were crocheting and knitting in aid of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative.

She was joined by three of her children Siyabonga Vilakazi (10), Thandolwethu Ndlovu (10) and Sinothile Ndlovu (2).

The two oldest children are also mad about their new hobby and were working on their third blanket at Lakeside Mall.

The mother said she has been gripped by crocheting and has very little time for anything else, to the point where her 22-year-old son complained about his mother’s newly-found obsession.

“Mom, these days you don’t cook, you only crochet,” said the son, Badile Vilakazi.

“I said he can cook for himself,” she replied.

The East Rand ambassador of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela initiative, Elsabe Booyens, said the volunteers are stationed at Lakeside Mall once a month.

The mall donates the premises for the day, as well as wool and several other items.

She said there about 200 people on the East Rand who are contributing to the blanket pool in the region.

The blankets will be donated to the less fortunate on Mandela Day.

Booyens said people who would like to get involved with the ongoing initiative can contact her for more information, on 076 406 2001.
