Man shot dead on N12 after robbing clothing store in Benoni

A man was shot dead on the N12 highway this morning (May 10), shortly after allegedly robbing an Edgars store at the Mayfield Square, near Daveyton.

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said five men entered the Edgars this morning.

”Five suspects entered and one pointed a firearm at the manager and told everyone that it was a robbery,” said Sekele.

”The manager and staff were instructed to be calm.”

Police said the men made off with seven bags of clothes and money.

Sekele said police suspect the robbers chased off in two vehicles,as two men, believed to be involved in the robbery, were pulled over on the N12.

”Our public order police unit were doing patrols on the N12 highway, at around 10am, when they spotted a suspicious white Opel Corsa delivery vehicle with a White canopy and two male occupants,” said EMPD media liaison officer inspector Kobeli Mokheseng.

He said the EMPD chased after the car and pulled the driver over just before the Rondebult off ramp.

Mokheseng said the driver of the car tried to bribe the officer with R100, after claiming he did not have a license.

The spokesperson said the passenger of the Opel approached the passenger in the EMPD vehicle with a 9mm and tried to disarm him.

Mokheseng said the driver of the Metro police vehicle saw this and shot at him, fatally wounding the man.

The other suspect fled the scene and has not been arrested.

A case of armed robbery will be investigated with the possibility of more charges to follow.
