SAPS member, civilian arrested for death of three suspects

A police officer and civilian have been arrested in connection with the death of three business robbery suspects.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) national spokesperson Moses Dlamini said another police officer and civilian are being sought in connection with the death of the suspects.

Dlamini said both officers are based at the SAPS crime intelligence office in Benoni, which services the entire Benoni cluster.

“It is alleged that on April 17, crime intelligence officers were investigating a business robbery [in Benoni] after which they arrested four suspects,” said IPID national spokesperson Moses Dlamini in a press release.

“It is alleged that one of the suspects was tortured and he died.

“He was taken to Pholosong Hospital but the hospital refused to admit him as he had already died.”

Dlamini said the deceased was allegedly loaded into a police van and driven to Carletonville.

“The policemen allegedly shot at the other suspects, resulting in the death of two of them,” said Dlamini.

“One survived and he was left for dead.”

Dlamini said the fourth man is still alive.

The Benoni SAPS have been approached for comment but did not reply at the time of publishing.
