Unique scanner at Lakeview

Dr De Villiers and partners, based at Lakeview Hospital, in Benoni, recently acquired a new CT scanner for its radiology department, which first scanned a patient on March 23.

According to Siemens, this is currently the only Siemens Somatom Scope CT scanner in South Africa, notable for its low cost and small size.

They said this scanner is reliable and promises high image quality at greatly reduced costs, compared to many other CT scanners currently in use in South Africa.

According to medicalnewstoday.com, CT scanners use X-rays to scan the patient’s body in a series of slice images, and then build an image on a computer, representing the patient’s internal physiology.

A radiology practice, Dr De Villiers and partners, organised the installation of the scanner at Lakeview Hospital, as the hospital’s radiology department lacked a CT scanner, though the technology forms a critical part of modern diagnosis and treatment.

“The recently commissioned Siemens state-of-the-art scanner will provide vastly increased diagnostic imaging capabilities at the hospital,” said Dr Loris Pagni, managing director of Dr De Villiers and partners.

“It (the scanner) will allow for and expedite the diagnosis of multiple medical conditions and consequently result in prompt patient treatment.”

The practice manages the radiology departments at several hospitals across Gauteng and took over at Lakeview Hospital in October, last year.

They wanted to bring in a CT scanner to improve service and treatment at the hospital.
