Driver of stolen truck arrested after stopping for petrol

The driver of a hijacked truck was arrested this morning (April 16), after stopping to fill up at a petrol station.

The eight tonne truck was hijacked earlier in the morning, in Vosloorus, and when EMPD noticed a vehicle tracker helicopter over Benoni CBD, they enquired about it and were given the truck’s description.

“The metro police spotted the truck at the Engen filling station, on Fifth Street, in Northmead, where the suspect, who had just paid R1 200 for filling up the stolen truck and was waiting for the petrol attendant to hand over the receipt, attempted to bolt on foot, but to no avail,” said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson.

EMPD caught up with the suspect, tackled him to the ground and arrested him.

The truck, which was carrying a consignment of vehicle parts, was recovered with all its cargo untouched and it was booked in at the SAPS Van Rhyn Deep Pound.

The 30 year-old Mozambican national was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, at Benoni police station.

He is expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.
