Truck and van collide on N12

A truck and a panel van collided on the N12 highway, after 7pm, on Tuesday night.

When ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene they were informed by bystanders that the truck driver had fled.

“Paramedics immediately assessed the injured in the panel van and found three passengers, all in their 40s, who had suffered minor to moderate injuries, and they were taken to Sunshine Hospital,” said Glen Orritt, ER24 spokesperson.

The driver of the panel van was trapped in his seat and appeared to have sustained internal injuries, along with a broken leg.

“Local fire and rescue teams worked for over an hour, using the Jaws of Life, along with other rescue equipment, to free the man,” said Orritt.

A medical helicopter was called in and the patient was airlifted from the scene to the Union Hospital, in Alberton.

“Thank you to the Benoni CPF, EMPD, fire and rescue for their assistance,” said Orritt.
