Nqubela learners taught important swimming skills

Children from Nqubela Primary School, in Daveyton, were given the opportunity to learn to swim and to showcase their skills, at the Benoni Northerns Swimming Pool, on Tuesday, March 24.

With only a dilapidated swimming pool close to the school, the learners do not have the opportunity to swim and learn important life skills, and the Learn To Swim (LTS) initiative offers them those important skills.

Impala Platinum sponsors the LTS programmes for schools in disadvantaged communities, who are, themselves, unable to fund or organise the activities, due to their limited budgets.

The swimming gala was organised in partnership with Eastern Gauteng Aquatics, which is based at the Boksburg Indoor Swimming Pool.

Alison Smith, from Eastern Gauteng Aquatics, said the gala aimed to make the children aware of water safety.

“They are taught to respect water and we believe that knowing how to swim is about providing children with life skills through swimming, so that they can protect themselves under water,” she explained.

The children were taught about freestyle swimming and how to use their arms and legs to get to the other side of the pool.

Each of the learners was given a medal after the training, for their participation in the gala.
