Graduation day at Manger Care Centre

The Manger Care Centre congratulated 12 students on their graduation in plant production, on Sunday, March 29.

The students followed a six-month course to obtain a National Certificate in plant production, as issued by AgriSETA.

The course, which falls in the learning sub-field of primary agriculture, gives each of the graduates 142 credits towards a degree in agriculture.

This was the first such a course to be offered at the Manger Care Centre, but will now be offered annually, headed by Samuel Oduniyi (course facilitator), Andrew Wessels (course administrator) and Jeanette Payling (quality assurance).

The centre worked to teach the students with rural backgrounds more about agriculture, in order to enhance their level of skill in the local and national agricultural industry.

The Manger Care Centre has been working to help the needy for the last 28 years.

The centre started as a social upliftment programme for the homeless, but eventually grew to equip disadvantaged people with all the tools needed to survive and thrive.

They achieve this through various programmes that provide food, clothes, skills development, employment opportunities, rehabilitation and housing to those who need it.

Oduniyi and most of the graduates were present when president Jacob Zuma launched a hydroponic/urban agricultural project at the centre on November 27, last year.

The project formed part of Zuma’s commitment in the State of the Nation Address, earlier last year, to launch projects which will provide sustainable food production.
