DA marches against drugs in Daveyton

The Democratic Alliance (DA) staged a march to the Daveyton Police Station on March 28, to deliver a memorandum, demanding the reintroduction of a narcotics unit.

The event was held and supported by members of the Ekurhuleni DA caucus, community members and several Member(s) of the Provincial Legislature (MPL).

The DA spokesperson on ICT, finance and social development, MPL Ashor Sarupen, said there has been an increase in drug-related crimes and drug use in the community of Daveyton.

Sarupen said criminals sell drugs to children through school fences.

He said he visited nine schools in Daveyton in three weeks and found that the schools were without rug testing kits.

The DA demanded the following in their memorandum:

n The reintroduction of specialised police units to deal with crimes – in particular the Narcotics Unit, to deal with drugs and drug-related crimes.

n Visible policing around schools to deter drug dealers from attempting to sell illicit substances to learners.

n More frequent raids, unannounced, of drug den facilities, where it is suspected that drugs are being traded.

n Proper investigations into police officers who are accused of colluding with drug dealers in our community.

Sarupen said his party is prepared to work with the SAPS in achieving these goals.

The provincial SAPS are working on introducing a drug master plan by September.
