Two boys (15) charged with vehicle theft after tampering with cars at Northmead Square

Two teenagers have been charged with the attempted theft of a motor vehicle, after allegedly fiddling with two cars at the Northmead Square this morning.

The suspects are alleged to have tampered with a Toyota Tazz and Toyota Conquest.

“A security guard noticed the two boys at the Northmead Square, at 9.45am, and phoned the sector manager,” said Benoni SAPS communications officer Const Zunickha Essakjee.

The Northmead Square’s security guards apprehended the youngsters while police responded.

“After police viewed CCTV footage, they saw them (the teenagers) roaming around the cars, so they brought them in for questioning.”

Essakjee told the City Times the suspects are claiming to be under age.

He said the boys’ parents are en route to the Benoni Police Station to produce birth certificates of their children.

If the suspects are found to be under age, they will be released into their parents’ custody on a warning pending a court appearance.

Northmead Square centre manager Tamara Mackenzie said: “I am very proud of the security as they did an excellent job in apprehending the suspects for the SAPS.”

She said the Northmead Square has noticed a drop in cases of vehicle theft, with the last reported incident being on February 28.
