Don’t open false cases

The Benoni SAPS has issued a stern warning to Benoni residents not to open false hijacking claims after a man was arrested for perjury, for claiming he was hijacked.

Col Herman Havenga, Benoni SAPS’s acting station commander, said residents should not underestimate police members’ ability to perform their job and open false cases.

According to Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, the man reported an attempted hijacking case on Saturday, March 14.

“He alleged that he was driving and stopped at a T-junction, in Mackenzie Park, when an man suddenly approached and pointed a firearm at him,” said Sekele.

He said the man jumped into his car, ordered him to drive to Soweto and that, on the way, he was involved in a minor accident.

“The man then came to the station to open the false case of attempted hijacking for his own personal reasons,” said Sekele.

An investigation by detectives revealed that the man was lying while he was being interviewed.

He later confessed that the attempted hijacking never occurred, and he was arrested and charged with perjury.

The man was released on bail and appeared at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court today.
