SPCA refutes turning away dog

The Benoni SPCA has denied turning away a Jack Russell which arrived at their premises on March 2, after being severely beaten in Daveyton.

The findings of the society’s investigation was released last week.

“It is confirmed that Peter Mnguni (the initial owner of the Jack Russell) brought a dog in dire need of veterinary treatment to the Benoni SPCA on the morning of March 2,” read the SPCA’s statement.

“He spoke to two of our kennel hands outside in the parking area.

“One of the kennel hands stated that the Benoni SPCA had no veterinarian, which is correct, and that he may have to take it to a private veterinarian.

“The second employee asked that Mnguni, before he left, should proceed to the reception and speak to the staff or management there, as they would know what to do.”

According to the statement, before the dog owner arrived at reception, Samantha Jacobs, who later took the dog and its owner to the Northmead Veterinary Clinic, “interrupted and took the dog”.

“At no point was any contact made with reception or management of the Benoni SPCA,” the statement read.

The City Times reported last week that Jacobs said she intervened after Mnguni was turned away by the Benoni SPCA, as he was told there was no veterinarian on hand.

Jacobs said, on Sunday, that she offered her assistance after Mnguni had consulted the SPCA’s reception.
