UPDATE: Police mount operation to find Chief Albert Luthuli Park killers

Police on Sunday mounted an operation in Chief Albert Luthuli Park, to search for the killers of seven people, who died in a shooting spree on Saturday night.

An 18-month-old baby was among the victims.

Three surviving victims were, on Monday, recovering in the Far East Rand Hospital.

Around 10 members of the Crystal Park SAPS and Gauteng Flying Squad entered the N12 informal settlement in several police vehicles, just after 1.30pm.

A source within the police told the City Times that police had entered the informal settlement after receiving a tip-off from an informant, that the killers were near the scene of the crime.

The operation yielded no success.

The City Times has learnt that the killers have been seen in the N12 informal settlement in the past.

A police source said the men had, in the past, consumed alcohol at a tuck shop, which also serves as an illegal liquor outlet.

Police suspect the March 14 incident is linked to illegal mining, with a source saying the owner of the tuck shop, who died in the incident, harboured illegal miners.

Police had, on Monday, not made any arrests.

The 18-month-old child and her mother, along with another woman, were among the dead outside the tavern.

A man’s body was also discovered on the street, opposite the business, while another corpse was found underneath a bed, inside the shack.

The body of the female owner of the establishment and that of another woman were also found inside the shack.

Sekele said one of the victims died in the Far East Rand Hospital, while another died in an ambulance on the scene.

A Chief Albert Luthuli Park resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he heard gun shots ringing for about 10 minutes on the night of the shooting.

The man visited the scene later that night and said he saw a lot of blood inside and outside the shack.

“Lots of people feel bad and don’t feel safe any more,” he added.

Police have no witnesses at this stage.

Statements will be taken from the victims in hospital, once they are in a fit condition.

A case of murder has been opened.

“We are appealing to anyone who might have seen or heard anything to come forward with information,” said Sekele.

People have been asked to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
