Two arrested after Pretoria Road robbery

Two men were arrested minutes after robbing two pedestrians on the corner of Vlei and Pretoria roads, on March 13.

Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz said two men were walking towards Crystal Park when they were confronted by a group of men in a Toyota Hilux bakkie.

At around 9.45pm the occupants of the bakkie, one of whom was armed with an air rifle, demanded that they hand over their phones.

The suspects drove down Cloverdene Road, towards Chief Albert Luthuli Park.

The victims flagged down a Benoni Community Police Forum (CPF) member doing patrols in the area, who then sent out a lookout to the CPF.

About 150m from the corner of Putfontein and Cloverdene roads, the suspects noticed a road block being conducted by the Crystal Park SAPS.

Maritz said three of them jumped off the back of the bakkie.

One ran towards the road block, while his two accomplices ran down Second Road.

The Crystal Park SAPS, who were involved with the road block, noticed the activity and arrested the man who ran in their direction.

Members of the Crystal Park and Benoni CPF arrested another suspect on Second Road.

The third man who jumped off the bakkie evaded arrest, along with the driver, who fled the scene in the vehicle.

Police seized three cellphones and an air rifle hand gun from the two arrestees.

A case of common robbery and possession of suspected stolen goods will be opened.

One of the two suspects is under police guard at the Tambo Memorial Hospital after breaking his leg when he jumped off the bakkie.

The men are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court soon.
