N12 closed following accident

Traffic was severely affected on the N12 highway this afternoon (March 9) after a helicopter was forced to land on the busy road to airlift a motor vehicle accident victim to hospital.

ER24 JHB East spokesperson Glen Orritt said the EMPD closed the highway under the Rondebult Road bridge from 4.30pm until 5.10pm.

Orritt said a bakkie, transporting a male occupant in his 60s, rolled near the Rondebult Road bridge.

Orritt said the bakkie came to a standstill on the grass embankment between the Rondebult Road on ramp and the highway.

“The driver was found seated in the vehicle,” said Orritt.

“He suffered two badly broken legs, chest and head injuries and a broken right arm.”

He was airlifted to the Milpark Hospital in a critical condition.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Authorities will investigate the accident.
