Hijackers nabbed in Farrarmere

Two suspects were apprehended in connection with a suspected hijacking, on Thursday morning, March 5, in Farrarmere.

At approximately 11am, members of the EMPD Equestrian Unit approached three suspicious individuals, who were loitering on the corner of Kei Road and Cambridge Street.

According to Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, two of the men were sitting on the ground using their cellphones, while the third was standing and nervously glancing around.

“After observing the three suspicious-looking individuals for some time, the metro police approached them,” said Kgasago.

“The one on his feet bolted and jumped into a white GWM sedan.”

The two individuals who were sitting, tried to run away, but one was apprehended by the EMPD and the other was caught by community members.

Kgasago said the men ditched two unlicensed firearms, a .45 pistol and a 9mm short pistol, which were recovered by the metro police.

The man, who had jumped into the car, sped away with a fourth suspect who had, at that point, been waiting in the vehicle.

Metro police shot at the cars tyres in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but it got away.

The vehicle was later found abandoned in Brentwood Park, but the two suspects had escaped.

Upon further investigation, the police discovered that the vehicle had been hijacked last month, in Sandringham, Johannesburg.

The two men who were arrested, are in their mid-twenties, and were charged at Benoni Police Station for being in possession of a stolen vehicle and two unlicensed firearms which had their serial numbers filed off.

They are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.
