Northmead accident victim (17) undergoes two operations

Dewald Hattingh (17) was still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Life the Glynnwood Hospital, on Tuesday, after being knocked off his motorcycle, in Northmead, on Monday morning.

The Hoërskool Hans Moore pupil was involved in the collision on Hanekam Street, at around 7.15am, while en route to school.

He was apparently hit by an SUV, which was exiting the parking lot at the Benoni Northerns Swimming Pool.

The boy’s mother, Linda Hattingh, said her son sustained a broken left leg and underwent two operations on Monday.

Doctors inserted a pin in his left leg in the first operation and unblocked an artery in his leg in the second one.

The teenager will undergo another operation on Thursday (February 26), when doctors will attend to damaged tendons in his leg.

The mother said she was disturbed by the news of the incident.

“It was a shock and it was difficult to see my child in that condition and not be able to help him,” she said.

Linda consoled Dewald at the accident scene, while paramedics were working on him, and he apologised to her.

“Mom, I’m sorry; it wasn’t my fault,” he said.

“I will never ride a bike again.”

Dewald was in a stable condition at the Life the Glynnwood Hospital, on Tuesday, and Linda said it will take months for him to recover from the accident.

The school said they will accommodate the pupil.
