Two more illegal miners found dead

Two bodies of suspected illegal miners were found on the old New Modder Road this morning (Friday February 20).

Security guards reportedly heard gun shots on Thursday, at about 8pm, but SAPS were alerted about the bodies only this morning, at 7.30am.

According to WO Ramothakhi Maqabe, Benoni cluster spokesperson, the bodies were found by a security company which is contracted to patrol the area.

Mine shaft three, which is close to the old New Modder Road, is suspected to be the area where the shootings took place.

Blood and gun cartridges were found next to the shaft.

Police suspect the men were carried from the shaft to the roadside, as one of the men had a stick under his body.

Two counts of murder will be opened at the Benoni Police Station.

In the past two weeks,  six bodies of illegal miners were found.

This latest discovery brings the total number of dead illegal miners found this month to eight.
