Tombstones vandalised in Daveyton

Fifty tombstones in a Daveyton cemetery have been vandalised.

On Friday night, residents were woken by strange noises coming from the cemetery.

An unidentified man was allegedly seen breaking tombstones, so community members took matters into their own hands and started beating the suspect.

Lieut Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for Benoni SAPS cluster, said police officers intervened and took the man to a local clinic before releasing him.

“On Friday, community members did not want to open a case because no one wanted to take responsibility,” said Sekele.

But on Saturday, concerned residents opened a case of malicious damage to property at the Daveyton Police Station.

Police officers are searching for the man, who is suspected of being responsible for the vandalism.
