Death toll rises in illegal mining battles

Another body of an illegal miner was found on Sunday.

According to WO Ramothakhi Maqabe, Benoni cluster spokesperson, the man had a gunshot wound to the head and a bullet was found next to his body.

It is suspected that he was shot at 3am on Sunday.

This brings the total number of illegal miners killed, in the past five days, to six.

On Friday, February 6, when mine officials visited the old shaft, they found five illegal miners in the area.

When they attempted to question them, some of the men ran into the mineshaft and others headed towards a hill in the area.

“One suspect was arrested, and explosives used by miners were found next to the shaft,” said Maqabe.

On Thursday, February 5, SAPS members received a tip-off from an illegal miner about a fight which led to the death of several men.

Four bodies were found; one in the bushes in Chief Albert Luthuli Park, two next to the Daveyton Main Road and one next to the mineshaft.

Five men were arrested; three were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds while the other two were taken to Crystal Park Police Station for questioning.

In the afternoon, police officers were alerted by Chief Luthuli Park residents that three illegal miners were hiding in the bushes.

A chase ensued and two miners were arrested while the third suspect was shot dead after attempting to shoot at police officers.

Capt Tsekiso Mofokeng, provincial SAPS spokesperson, said murder charges would be opened and investigations are still on going.

Deaths of illegal miners are not new to the area as 13 bodies were found, in July, in a disused mineshaft in New Modder.
