UPDATE: Community saves valuables from burning house

About 15 people managed to pull household items from a burning Zesfontein house, before it was razed.

Members of the Crystal Park Community Policing Forum (CPF) and other community members responded to a call on Saturday, to a house fire at the corner of Dassie Street and Leopard Road, at around 2pm.

Crystal Park CPF sector four chairperson Paul Raley told the City Times he and othet members removed furniture and fridges, along with anything they could find, from the burning double-storey, thatched roof home.

The brave volunteers toiled for half an hour, but were unable to rescue all the home’s contents.

The volunteers and Ekurhuleni Emergency Services worked together to extinguish the fire, which continued for several hours.

At approximately 5pm emergency personnel continued containing and damping down at the scene.

Raley said volunteers managed to free a Pekingese dog from the fire.

The dog sustained burns to its back paws, but is still alive.

It is unclear at this stage what caused the fire, and no one was injured.
