Be alert when walking around CBD

The Benoni SAPS is warning members of the public to be more vigilant in the Benoni CBD.

According to Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, a number of robberies have been reported to the Benoni Police Station; these occurred on Tom Jones Street, Bunyan Street, Voortrekker Street, Victoria Avenue and Rothsay Street.

“In a recently reported case the victim was attacked at gunpoint in one of the targeted streets; her cellphone and her handbag, containing cash, were taken,” said Sekele.

She added that thugs are targeting women carrying handbags, people walking from the bank after withdrawing money and people carrying cellphones with earphones.

“We urge people to always be aware of their surroundings, especially when walking along the roads in the CBD,” she said.

”We also encourage them to report any suspicious movements in the vicinity of ATMs, or people loitering.”

Sekele added that people must take active responsibility for their community and help police officers to combat crime.

“Our sector vehicles are patrolling the area 24/7 and it might happen that when an incident takes place they are patrolling on another street,” she explained.

”The Sector 3 vehicles can be contacted on 071 675 6718 and 071 675 6719.”

Shop owners are also urged to use the sector numbers in case of emergency.
