Your blood is needed

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has experienced a massive decline in blood donations in January, after a significant increase donations over the festive season.

“Donors showed their support for SANBS during the traditionally difficult festive season,” said the blood service’s communications manager, Vanessa Raju

“We managed to get through this period without going into a shortage; for this we say a big thank you to all who gave to unselfishly.

“However, there has been a massive decline in donations as we entered January 2015.

“This resulted in the days cover dropping to 1,6 days.”

A five-day blood stock level is needed to meet the country’s demands, which equates to 3 000 units of blood a day, nationally.

The SANBS is encouraging all donors to donate blood on a regular basis.

To recognise the efforts from their committed donors, the blood service will give a special edition sports bag to all donors who achieve four blood donations this year.
