“Donors showed their support for SANBS during the traditionally difficult festive season,” said the blood service’s communications manager, Vanessa Raju
“We managed to get through this period without going into a shortage; for this we say a big thank you to all who gave to unselfishly.
“However, there has been a massive decline in donations as we entered January 2015.
“This resulted in the days cover dropping to 1,6 days.”
A five-day blood stock level is needed to meet the country’s demands, which equates to 3 000 units of blood a day, nationally.
The SANBS is encouraging all donors to donate blood on a regular basis.
To recognise the efforts from their committed donors, the blood service will give a special edition sports bag to all donors who achieve four blood donations this year.
The minimum requirements to be a blood donor are:
- be between the ages of 16 and 65 years,
- weigh minimum of 50kg,
- be in general good health,
- live a safe sexual life style.
Benoni residents can donate blood at the Northmead branch, at 42 Fourteenth Avenue.
