EMPD impounds 37 taxis on Voortrekker Street

EMPD officers impounded 37 mini-bus taxis in a special operation on Wednesday, January 28.

According Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, this operation, which commenced in October, is aimed at ensuring that taxis do not use Voortrekker Street in contravention of their route permits.

“It’s also aimed at ensuring that no obstructions to other vehicles takes place.

“This operation is ongoing and will be sustained until the problem is eradicated,” said Kgasago.

For the past few months, EMPD officers handed out pamphlets and consulted with Benoni Taxi Association management to stop committing serious traffic offences on Voortrekker Road.

However, according Kgasago, some taxi drivers continued defying the law which lead to a number of taxis being impounded.

“All 37 taxis were taken to the EMPD Boksburg Pound where they were released on payment of a hefty fine,” said Kgasago.
