Top Ekurhuleni schools and matriculants recognised by mayor’s office

Several Benoni-based schools and matric pupils were rewarded for their hard work, at Emperors Palace, on January 21, at Ekurhuleni's annual Academic Excellence Awards ceremony.

The municipality’s executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, congratulated the class of 2014 and thanked all the role players in council for their support in awarding bursaries to the youth.

“I want to express my gratitude to the collective of this council for every time we make contributions that the council, and of course the party in charge, see it fit to go in this direction,” he said.

The municipality allocated R5-million to assist 175 learners with bursaries, and another R10-m has been set aside to assist 289 local youths.

“As we continue to upscale this intervention we have resolved to give full bursaries to the best performing matriculants present here,” the mayor added.

“The city has, further, made a commitment to provide local graduates with an internship placement programme, either with the city or some of our corporate partners.

“In the last financial year alone, we allocated R20,4-m to internship, leadership and experiential learning for the youth in Ekurhuleni.

“Almost 1 500 youngsters benefited.”

The municipality is set on establishing 14 youth centres in the municipality, with the aim of supporting young people to pursue business and skills development.
