Pug Rescue receives support

Pug Rescue, was one of three beneficiaries of a donation of dog and cat food to the value of R30 000, in December.

One of the country’s leading hygiene services companies, Bidvest Steiner, decided to make this contribution instead of giving out Christmas gifts.

The company chose this course of action because December is known to be a difficult month for animal welfare in South Africa.

As the fireworks season gives way to the festive season, a large number of animals are abandoned by owners going on holiday.

The other organisations that benefited were Durban SPCA and Johannesburg and Uitsig Animal Rescue in Cape Town.

Rika van Rooyen of Bidvest Steiner said although the company is focused on helping to make people-based environments more hygienic, safe and pleasant to interact in, they are also concerned about the welfare of animals.

“We are hoping the donation of food helped to make December a little more pleasant for many of the country’s animals which are cared for by shelters,” she said.

President of Pug Rescue SA Cheryl Gaw thanked the company for their generous food donation.

“You would not believe our amazement when the truck arrived here and we received 1 025 kilograms of food,” she said.

Gaw added that the society repacked the food into three kilogram packets for their Thanda Inja Outreach Project in the Gabon Informal Settlement in Daveyton.

“As Animal Welfare we see some horrendous cases in the field and our hearts are always bigger than our pockets.

“This very generous donation makes our lives just that much easier, as we do not have to stress about where the food budget will come from to feed the very needy animals,” she said.
