Police officer and civilian killed in Great North accident

An on duty police officer and a civilian died following a motor vehicle accident in the early hours of Sunday morning (January 18).

The accident occurred on the corner of Great North Road and Mercury Street.

”The eyewitnesses allege that the driver of a private vehicle was driving at a high speed and failed to stop at a red traffic light,”  said provincial SAPS spokesperson Capt Doniah Mothutsane.
”He collided with a state vehicle with police members who were patrolling the area.
”Both drivers, the driver of the state motor vehicle and of the private car, were certified dead on the scene.”
