Suspects arrested for murder of illegal miners

The Benoni SAPS were able to swiftly arrest two suspects, aged between 27 and 30, for the murder of two illegal miners.

According to Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Solly Thabethe and Constable Rufus Mhlongo received information about two illegal miners who were murdered on January 3.

“The officers proceeded to mineshaft nine, on Kingsway Road, next to Sasol garage, were they were told the bodies were dumped,” said Sekele.

However, it too was dark when the officers arrived and they could not see anything.

Thabethe and Mhlongo went to Lindelani informal settlement to find the two suspects.

“They tried to bring the two men in for questioning at the Benoni SAPS, but the men refused.

“The men were later taken to Brakpan Police Station where the officers related the story to the officers there,” said Sekele.

The police returned to the shaft and found two decomposed bodies next to railway tracks.

Col Martin van Niuwenhuizen, Benoni SAPS station commander, congratulated the men for their dedication as they acted immediately on the information.

“Police officers will be able to combat crime if all members act just as these officers did,” said van Niuwenhuizen.
