Rainy season aggravates damage to roads

Potholes continue to raise concerns among Benoni residents during the rainy season.

A reader said a number of roads, including Geldenhuys Road and Marigold Street, in Putfontein, have deep potholes that pose a danger to cars.

Some of the holes are undetectable, because a number of them are covered by water.

Ward 28 councillor Mary Goby said the municipality and ward councillors rely on members of the public to report potholes in their areas.

“When residents spot potholes they need to report them on the Ekurhuleni website, at www.ekurhuleni.gov.za,” she said.

She added that rain is a serious problem, as the water sits in the potholes and causes an increase in damage to the roads.

Meanwhile, the Ekurhuleni Metro’s spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, said the roads and storm water department is currently patching potholes that have appeared on Ekurhuleni’s roads.

“Following the stormy and rainy season experienced in the past few months it is inevitable that a number of potholes have appeared in our roads,” he explained.

The metro encourages residents to work with it and to report potholes through the call centre, on 086 054 3000.
