Local buskers set new record

Two local music groups have successfully achieved the Guinness World Record for the most people busking simultaneously.

The John Wesley Community Centre’s marimba band performed alongside the Zama Montessori Band at the Northmead Square at the event in June 2014.

To set the record, all participating musicians around the world had to busk for a minimum of five minutes.

A total of 19 countries participated in the attempt.

The two local groups lured a big crowd when they delivered their combined beautiful melodies to the public.

Both centres are beneficiaries of the Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora, and outreaches of the Northfield Methodist Church.

The John Wesley Community Centre is an aftercare facility for orphaned and vulnerable children, situated in Etwatwa.

The Zama Montessori Centre is an underprivileged school based in Putfontein that aims to provide children between the ages of two and 12 with a reliable education.

Headmistress of the Zama Montessori Centre Bukelwa Selema said she was thrilled that the record was broken.

“The children enjoyed being part of this world event,” she said.

Manager of the John Wesley Community Centre Thoko Nkomo said they feel honoured to be part of the achievement, during which these young musicians’ talents were showed off.

“It shows that life does not end in Etwatwa. The sky is the limit,” said Nkomo.

“If you are motivated, you can fly,” she added.

President of the Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora Denis Brandjes said the club was honoured to be part of the opportunity to showcase the youth as they participated in this global event.

“Light shines in the darkest of circumstances as music brings joy and hope to our youth,” he added.

The City Times reported on the event in June.
