Trees uprooted in moderate gale over Benoni

A storm which descended on parts of Benoni yesterday (Wednesday) resulted in several trees being blown over, blocking several roads to traffic.

Crystal Park and Cloverdene appear to have been the hardest hit, with reports of trees being uprooted on Eighth Road (near North Road), telephone poles being blown over on North Road (near Seventh and Sixth roads) and more trees being uprooted on Waterkloof and Clydesdale roads, opposite the Crystal Park Baptist Church.

Rynfield-based climatologist Clive Webber said his weather station, which is situated in Rynpark, recorded moderate gale winds measuring 53km/h.

This reading was taken at 3.43pm.

Webber measured 9mm of rain between 3.30pm and 4pm.

The climatologist said wind speed of that nature occurs in this region only one to three times a year.

Webber added that the readings may have been different a couple of hundred metres away, which could mean the storm was stronger over Crystal Park and Cloverdene.
