Community rally to pay for murdered teenager’s funeral

A mother's inability to pay for her murdered daughter's funeral, has resulted in the community of Daveyton rallying to come up with the funds to bury the teenager.

15-year-old Lerato Potsi’s half-naked body was found on a bed, with what appeared to be blood around her neck, in a Daveyton shack on January 3.

The victim’s mother, Mapule Potsi, approached the Rock Da Shades Entertainment non-profit organisation for financial assistance.

“The mother of the child is someone we know and she came to us and asked for assistance, saying she does not have money to bury her child,” said Gregory Hlatshwayo, a co-founder of the organisation.

Hlatshwayo said the organisation took to social media to ask the public for monetary donations.

He said by the end of Wednesday, R6 360 was raised for the girl’s funeral.

The cost of groceries and an undertaker will be paid from the money which has been raised, but there are still outstanding expenses.

Hlatshwayo said between 30 to 50 people have donated to the cause and there is still money coming in.

The heartbroken mother told the City Times that she is grateful for help from Rock Da Shades Entertainment.

“I am happy that they came to donate the money to help us bury her, even though I am still hurt,” said Mapule.

The Baikgetse Primary School pupil was described by her mother as a quite child who was obedient.

People have until Saturday to donate money towards the funeral.

If you would like to pledge money, contact Hlatshwayo on 082 315 3003 or Gary Magagula on 071 613 5069.

Police have opened a case of murder and have not yet arrested anyone for the crime.
