New commander to deal with problematic taxis in Voortrekker Street

Recently appointed EMPD chief superintendent Jonas Mokhele Matjiu's immediate focus will be the troublesome taxis in Voortrekker Street.

For years, community members have been calling on the law enforcement agencies to act on taxi drivers who do as they wish on that road.

Matjiu, the Benoni precinct commander, is among the 13 chief superintendents appointed to bolster the EMPD’s operative management level in order to ensure efficiency and effectual control and planning at first line management level.

“My immediate focus will be enforcing bylaws and dealing with hawkers and taxis in Voortrekker Street,” said Matjiu.

He will also focus on crime in general.

Matjiu is prepared to work with everybody to ensure that service delivery is realised.

He was born in Tembisa and worked at the 21 South African Infantry Battalion task force from 1995 to 1999, when he joined the Edenvale Traffic Department as a traffic officer.

n In 2001 he was appointed supervisor of the speed section, speed equipment operators instructor and the warrant section at the Edenvale Traffic Department.

n In 2005 he become a regional commander of the speed section in the northern region.

n In 2009 he become the Bromberg precinct commander.

n In 2011 he become precinct commander in Winnie Mandela section, Tembisa, until September, this year, when he was appointed Benoni precinct commander.
