Increase in concocted hijacking cases a concern for police

Three people have been arrested in the past three months for opening false hijacking cases at the Benoni Police Station.

The Benoni SAPS are warning the community that such cases won’t be tolerated and that those who commit such crimes will face the full might of the law.

The latest case involves a security guard, who was arrested after he claimed to have been hijacked, on November 1.

“He took his company car home when he was not supposed to,” said Sekele.

The vehicle was stolen from his home at night, while he was asleep, and decided to open a false case the next morning.

Sekele said the guard claimed to have been hijacked on Main Reef Road, towards Brakpan, in the morning.

There were, however, people who noticed the bakkie being pushed out of his yard in Daveyton at night, by two men who were stealing it.

Those people immediately reported the matter to the Daveyton police.

The bakkie was recovered in Mayfield and details of the situation emerged when police started questioning the man in possession of the vehicle.

“He said it was sold to him by two men and, when the police went to those two men, they told them where they had stolen it,” said Sekele..

Police confronted the guard with these details and he admitted that he made up the hijacking story.

He was arrested alongside the three men.

The guard was charged with perjury, the two men with theft of a motor vehicle and the other man with possession of stolen property.

They will appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court soon.
