Man dies in Farrarmere house fire

A man was burnt beyond recognition in a Farrarmere house fire, late last night.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said police arrived at the Brooke Street scene last night, to find the fire brigade already on scene.

The spokesperson said Ekurhuleni Emergency Services told police that a man had died in the fire.

A woman living near the half-burnt house, Suzette McLaren, told the City Times this morning that she was alerted to the blaze by crackling noises.

She went to her front door and saw the raging flames.

McLaren said she heard no screams coming from the house and did not know whether anyone was inside at the time.

A woman, who was in the house when it caught fire, was transported to the Netcare Linmed Hospital for smoke inhalation.

It is not yet clear what the relationship is between the man and woman.

An inquest docket has been opened at the Benoni Police Station.
