Contraceptive implant available at metro clinics

The new sub-dermal implant contraceptive is now available at 88 primary health care facilities across Ekurhuleni.

A total of 142 nurses have been trained in inserting the implant without supervision.

According to Ekuhuleni, the contraceptive device has proven to be popular, and over 14 800 women in the metro have already had the sub-dermal contraceptive device inserted at public facilities since March 2014.

“Upon completing a short course, each trainee is required to practically insert five implants under supervision at a clinic before being accredited; this is to ensure that the staff member is competent to insert the implant,” said Dr Zodwa Mabange, manager of maternal health, childcare and women’s health.

Mabange adds that, since the roll-out, they have received positive feedback from women, with no side effects being reported.

The metro will continue to train more nurses.
