434 000 free bins to be distributed by metro

Daveyton resident, Phineas Morereane, was one of many who received 240 litre refuse bins from the Ekurhuelni Metropolitan Municipality on Monday, October 27.

“I am pleased by the municipality’s initiative to provide the community with bigger bins,” said Morereane.

He added that he hopes the roll-out will help to reduce the number of rodents in the area.

The metro hopes that the distribution of bins will drive the rodents out of the area, because they will no longer have a readily available food source from the heaps of illegally dumped garbage.

The metro has close to 434 000 bins still to be delivered in Kempton Park, Benoni, Springs, Boksburg South, Palm Ridge, Katlehong and Gemiston.

Distribution is currently taking place in Daveyton and will soon be followed by Etwatwa.

“Distribution details will be announced by the municipal service provider when they are in the area, and residents may contact their ward councillors for clarity on the venues and distribution times,” said Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni spokesperson.

The metro began the with the mass roll-out of the bins in Nigel and Duduza during the 2008/09 financial year, followed by Tembisa, Wattville and Actonville.

“Only one wheelie bin will be allocated to each household and residents taking more than one bin should be mindful that they will be charged an additional R120.36 per month,” said Gadebe.

Residents are requested to bring a copy of their identity documents and their municipal services account when collecting a bin.
