Youngsters learn to handle snakes

Morehill residents Wayne (11) and Alex (7) Bowles recently completed a snakebite course at the African Snakebite Institute.

They were trained at the Safari Ranch, in Muldersdrift.

The brothers have an interest in reptiles and have a snake (an American corn snake named Fang) and a spectacled caiman, a type of crocodile, as pets.

And, because their parents have a holiday home in Port Elizabeth, where there is an abundance of venomous snakes in the area, it made sense for them to learn how to identify and safely remove problem snakes.

The course taught them a wide range of topics, including an introduction to snakes, such as what to do and what not do when faced with a snake, as well as the behaviour, biology and myths about snakes.

Shawn Hefer, from the institute, said the course is a must for everyone, regardless of whether they are new to the world of snakes or a snake keeper.
