Off-duty policeman shot while trying to stop robbery in progress

An off-duty police officer was shot and injured in Daveyton on October 21.

Benoni SAPS cluster police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said that the officer, who is stationed in Parkview, noticed three men attacking the occupants of a vehicle delivering cigarettes in Hlakwana Street.

“The officer, not realising that the robbers were armed, pulled out his firearm and tried to scare them away,” said Sekele.

However, one of the men had a gun and fired at the officer, hitting him in the upper body.

The robbers then disarmed the officer and took boxes of cigarettes from the car before fleeing on foot.

The officer is recovering in a local hospital and the police are still looking for the suspects.
