Choirs deliver a showstopper performance

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality hosted the second instalment of the Melting Pot Choral Festival, which saw 10 choirs competing for the R500 000 prize.

The event took place at Carnival City, on Saturday, October 18.

South African Singers were named winners of the Best African Rendition category and walked away with prize money of R250 000.

Kopano Chorus won the Best Choral Rendition and were rewarded with R250 000, with the conductor, Tshepo Manamela, being awarded R15 000 and a one-year scholarship with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.

The competition is hosted by the city, each year, to pay tribute to Oliver Tambo’s life, a legacy through songs.

Mondli Gungubele, Ekurhuleni mayor, complimented the choirs on their performances.

“Choral music is the most underrated genre of music in the country, yet the most therapeutic to consume.

“Thus, the city of Ekurhuleni is putting its weight behind this form of music in order to uplift the standard of choral music in the country,” said Gungubele.
