Waste material makes a difference

The Wattville Ithuseng Recycling Co-op Ltd is changing the way waste material is viewed and used within the Wattville community.

Ithuseng was announced as the winners of the recycling 2014 Eco-logic Awards, on September 17.

Eco-logic awards are sponsored by Collect-a-Can and Ithuseng was recognised for inspiring work in developing the community by using recyclable waste.

The organisation is managed by 10 dedicated women who want to make a difference in developing the community of Wattville.

The project aims to transform waste into artwork and create employment opportunities and educate the community about the importance of a clean and healthy environment.

“There was high unemployment in Wattville and children were playing at the dangerous dumping sites; we decided to stand together and start this recycling project,” said Nthabiseng Mohoto, public relations manager.

The project teaches its members basic craft skills to create products from recyclable waste, such as floor mats, plate mats, room dividers and handbags, which are sold to the local community.

“It is rewarding to see how we change the lives of ordinary people; some members have opened their own ventures after learning the basic art and craft skills from this project,” said Mohoto.

The women involved within the organisation have great plans for next year, such as growing their recycling project.

“We would like to have our own buy-back centre, where the community can sell their recyclable waste to us,” Mohoto added.

“And we aim to open our craft centre, where our crafts and other items can be sold to the broader public.”

Zimasa Velaphi, public relations and marketing manger at Collect-a-Can, mentioned the importance of communities changing their mindsets on waste.

“It is important for all communities, especially the disadvantaged, to understand that waste has value and that it creates an opportunity for individuals to start their own ventures,” she said.
