Nine drivers nabbed for speeding

The EMPD arrested nine drivers for speeding on a stretch of Kingsway Road, between the N12 freeway and Modderbee Road, on October 16.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said the road is invariably used by some motorists as a speedway, disrespecting the 80km/h speed limit.

“The EMPD set speed traps from 4.45am and nine drivers ended up in police cells, rather than at their places of employment,” he added.

Kgasago said that, at 5.36am, a 26-year-old man in a VW sedan was clocked at 132km/h, with the second worst caught doing 123km/h in a Kia Hatchback, at 5.20am.

The other arrested drivers registered speeds of not less than 118km/h.

“All the arrested drivers cited reasons of either being late for work or rushing to work for their speeding,” he said.

The speedsters were taken to the Benoni Police Station and charged with reckless and negligent driving.

They were released after posting bail of R1 000 each.

They will appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court soon.
