Free vehicle assessments for truck owners

The Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality is requesting that the owners of trucks with a gross vehicle mass of 3 500kg and more, as well as taxi and bus owners, visit its testing stations for free vehicle assessments.

These assessments follow the massive multiple pile-up on the N12 East, in Alberton, on Tuesday, October 14.

“The free vehicle assessment campaign is open for the entire month of October, to mark National Transport Month,” said Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni’s media liaison spokesperson.

The participating testing stations include those in Nigel, Springs, Brakpan, Germiston, Boksburg and Kempton Park.

This campaign aims to curb fatal road accidents that occur as a result of unroadworthy vehicles.

“Assessments include the checking of tyres, brakes, handbrakes, steering mechanisms and the general condition of the vehicle,” said Gadebe.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, Thumbu Mahlangu, said the assessments are important for Ekurhuleni, as some of the country’s busiest national roads, such as the N12, N3 and Gillooly’s Interchange, are part of the city.

“Ensuring that we have roadworthy vehicles on our roads is vital for us, because we have a high volume of heavy vehicles in and out of our city, because of the large industries we have in our municipality,” said Mahlangu.

He further encouraged public transport providers to continue testing their vehicles on a regular basis, even after the campaign.
