Post Office will be closed due to vandalism

The Benoni Post Office will not open tomorrow (Tuesday) due to the damage caused to the facility in a violent act of vandalism this morning.

“Repairs to the building will begin as soon as possible to minimise the disruption of service, but the office will not reopen for service on October 7,” said Lungile Lose, spokesman for the SA Post Office.

“Employees will receive professional trauma counselling where appropriate.”

The City Times reported on the damage inflicted at the Benoni Post Office this afternoon.

Lose said a quick response from the SA Post Office’s tactical team and the SAPS prevented anyone from being injured.

He said a similar attack took place at the Farrarmere Post Office today.

Lose said the people who invaded the post office building made it clear that their intention was to intimidate non-striking employees, but did not identify themselves as belonging to any specific labour union or group.

No arrests have yet been made.

The SA Post Office requests anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of culprits in these cases to report it to the Post Office’s Crimebuster Hotline on 0800 020 070.
