Van Nieuwenhuizen is acting Benoni SAPS commander
With Benoni SAPS commander Brig Poobalan Subbiah now heading the cluster, Col Martin van Nieuwenhuizen is the acting station commander.
Van Nieuwenhuizen has been the station’s head of visible policing since May.
As head of visible policing he doesn’t have to dig deep to fulfil his new role.
He is a seasoned police officer, with 36 years of experience in the service.
He spent two years at the Van Ryn Vehicle Pound, before moving to the Benoni SAPS.
Prior to that,Van Nieuwenhuizen was the commander of the Boksburg North Police Station.
The acting commander said he will focus on priority crimes, without overlooking others.
“I will make sure that they are reduced and will utilise all sources possible to achieve this,” he added.
The priority crimes in the area include drugs, prostitution, housebreaking and robberies and theft of motor vehicles.
Van Nieuwenhuizen said that police will also focus on liquor outlets, as most crimes, especially those that are drug-related, happen there.
He said the SAPS will continue to work together with the CPF, businesses, private security and the community at large to combat crime.
