Woman dies on Pretoria Road (R51), five injured

One person died and five others were injured in an accident on Pretoria Road (R51) this morning.

A light motor vehicle and bakkie collided in a head-on collision at 10.30am, about 1km before the Bapsfontein four-way stop.

ER24 JHB East spokesperson Glen Orritt said the 27-year-old woman (the only occupant of the light motor vehicle) sustained massive injuries and was dead on paramedics’ arrival.

Orritt said the car she was travelling in caught fire and witnesses later extinguished the blaze.

The five occupants of the bakkie were between the ages of 30 and 50.

The driver of the vehicle was mobile on scene when paramedics arrived.

Orritt said it is suspected that two of the occupants were ejected out of the bakkie’s canopy.

One of the passengers was critically injured and placed on a manual ventilator, with the remaining three sustaining moderate to light injuries.

The five occupants of the bakkie were transported to the Tembisa Hospital.

Orritt thanked the EMPD Equestrian Unit and fire services for their assistance on scene.
